Jan Hull The Stoneist

After retiring from her employee-benefits career, Jan intended to write and play golf, but didn't foresee that a casual introduction to stone carving would become her avocation. Aside from two subsequent, short, workshops, she has avoided any instruction, preferring to discover her own techniques and style.

She carves two very different types of stone: sandstone and soapstone. Sandstone, quarried in Wallace, NS, is well-suited to large-scale outdoor sculptures. Soapstone, mostly from Brazil, is much softer and in smaller pieces, and is best enjoyed in one's home where the many colours and patterns in the stone can be appreciated.

Jan is a member of the Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS) and Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council (NSDCC). She exhibits in various shows and galleries, including Swoon Gallery online. She welcomes visitors to her garden gallery by appointment.
